Resident Evil 5

I just got my hands on a copy of resident Evil 5 for Xbox 720 (haaa got you) and I was very disappointed from the get go. At first I thought that I did not give enough attention and interest to the game but I just could not get to enjoy it.

I have heard from my gaming buddies that it was terrible but now I experienced it first hand and it made me agree with them. The issue here not that the actual game sucks but how is it possible to be so different from Resident Evil 4? Is it our perception, is the game so bad compared with RE4 or we just got bored with the style. I only played RE4 and the first chapter was terrible for me. But then when I got the hang of it I really enjoyed it.  Then what is the difference between the two? I am here to ask all of you because I know what my displeasures were.

First, it felt claustrophobic because you could at move almost at all. I can’t even describe it because the way one controls his character it is ass backwards. I did play RE4 before COD4 or other FPS but I readily enjoyed the moving ability in all the FPS except on RE series. It was ridiculous the way the movement was developed.

I don’t understand why I liked the RE4 and I don’t like RE5, perhaps because that was my first series of RE. Anyway the controls and movement were similar in both RE that I played and it is mind bugling that I don’t like it now. Is it the fact that I lost my patience or is it just a horrible design?

I understand that this is how RE started with shitty ass movement, but things evolve. Why did they have to be so conservative and just keep it so real? Why didn’t they implement the jumping and moving while aiming is beyond me. How hard would have that been? I guess I am hoping that someone from the game design will come and answer me on my blog… Dream on… Capcom open your eyes and years, here it comes for free, no market research no paid game testing. We don’t like to feel claustrophobic in a game. And we don’t like being frustrated either. At least me.

The fighting was terrible. First of all I don’t know if it is possible to change the color of the laser but I can’t actually see the fucking thing because it is red on a mostly yellow background, and I am protanope (Color blindness, or Color blindness, a color vision deficiency, is the inability to perceive differences between some of the colors that others …) One would expect that they would research this matter, since this is visual entertainment. The melle fighting where you have to actually hold the  knife and slice like an idiot and you cannot even turn side to side is just too insulting. In addition you have a character that has to get a queue button in order to jump from one ledge to another.  The running is just to tiring, my left thumb was hurting from trying to press that thumb stick to be able to run. I know there is another command for it but it is just too stupid. That is why these controllers have analog sticks so you give the character more speed the more you move the stick.Besides the fact that the player feels like a prisoner the game is actually tiring on one’s hands. Unbelivable.

Now a few days later when I upgraded in rank and upgraded the weapons I find the game more enjoyable. It doesn’t suck that bad. But in all above aspects it still does. In addition, the inventory is too small for all the shit that one needs with him. Playing cooperatively also sucks because one cannot exchange weapons with his partner, at least I tryied and it did not work. I guess they did not think about that stuff. Capcom just did not have it this time. In rest the game has the graphics, and the cut scenes, sometimes a bit too long  and too many. I started enjoying it a bit the second or day of playing. As a last thing I just want to say that they did add some speed to the zombies but none to the characters so it seems a bit unfair.

The best part of the game is the slaughter, and the fun part is that the zombies don’t reappear like in Dead Rising. That was the most disappointing thing because it gives a feeling of wiping out all the work you did killing all of them. Perhaps they will implement a better algorithm on that.

I guess that a second day of playing answered my own puzzle why I liked RE4 and not 5. Well, I din’t like any of them at the begining. So I guess is still an ok game, but it should have been improved on the movement and aiming.  Also so far I did not find any treasures that can be combined, I hope they didn’t elimate that feature.

XBOX 360 vs PS3 addition

Sometime ago I did a rudimentary comparison between XBOX and PS3. This is a small addition to that.

You cannot play a cooperative game with two profiles on the same console, like a split screen thing. I tried this with COD WAW and I gave up pretty quickly when I could not find it. On Xbox I tried wit Resident Evil 5 and it worked like a charm. I also did it on Fight Night 3. I guess that is another mistake for PS3.

This is where the experience shows. MS is a software company and I can see that they have a superior OS on Xbox. Sony built a monster power but their OS is lacking.

I was looking on New Egg’s website and among other things I found this $3000 video card. Well this is $3000 at the time of the writing, but who knows what it will be in 6 months. Nevertheless I am very curious how would this thing work out in a computer and what type of games can it render and how well. I have been out of the PC games for a while and I lost touch with what’s out there in terms of  graphics. I guess the older one grows he or she can no longer take uncomfortable PC chair. We move to consoles and the couch.

Here is a link to New Egg’s site: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133253

Anyway if any one of you have such a monster of a video card tell the rest of us how is it working.

XBOX 360 vs PS3

I have been dragged in this by my colleagues who have PS3s. They kneeled by them and they pledged their undying love and allegiance from the first day they acquired them. Over time I found the excuse in the blue ray player to buy myself one too. Since then I had countless discussions about which of the two systems is better.

I am going to list a series of problems with the systems so everyone will be in the know.

HARDWARE CONFIGURATION:

The PS3: Wireless capabilities out of the box, blue ray player, faster CPU, and HDMI. I don’t want to hear comments that some Xboxes come with HDMI now, mine doesn’t have one.
The XBOX loses the hardware aspect compared with PS3 especially that ALL Xboxes get the ring of fire and they have to be shipped for repairs.

The controllers are for both OK. I tend to like better the Xbox controller because is larger and feels more comfortable in my hands.

SOFTWARE CAPABILITIES:

The PS3: The ability to install a Linux based OS like Yellow dog Linux, or Ubuntu gives the PS3 a big plus, especially that you can use Linux to rip Blue-Ray DVDs. PS3 also has the Home game, a social type a game that players can meet and chat online, which diversifies the software capabilities out of the box for PS3. Also the PS3 network added that world news and weather feature. The protein folding is good but it should be made so that the ps3 launches it as a screensaver when idle, and it should be able to run in the background when we are watching a movie, but is not. Because I am not willing to let my PS3 running, which is a power hungry monster, just for Folding@home.

The XBOX: On the software side the XBOX OS is much finer tuned than the PS3. The transitions from the OS to the game is done smooth and without sound glitches or screen flickers. The fade in and out from game to OS and vice versa are perfect. The glitches are noticeable on the PS3 for people that use the HDMI feature. The XBOX allows for background downloads whereas the PS3 doesn’t and it is annoying to wait there for fifteen minutes until a random game download finishes.

ONLINE :

From the online game mode the XBOX live is superior to PS3 network because of quality. In the first place the headset dialogues are much clearer on Xbox live. On PS3 the dialog is constantly breaking up. The draw back on XBOX live would be the fee, but really analyzing this feature I really wish that PS3 would have a monthly fee if their network quality would become superior. In addition the Netflix feature with Xbox live really kicks ass with the exception that Netflix has mostly shitty movies on instant watch. Maybe we will see a Blockbuster and Sony coalition.

Another thing that the PS3 seems to have better than the XBOX is the new type of controller similar to the wii-mote. I know that the XBOX project Natal looks good but I doubt that it really works. And I really hated the British commentator the way he was glorifying that little virtual boy like it was the “Never Ending Story”, fuck that. In addition the demo videos they had with the games where the whole family is part of one game, seems like a lot of BS. Because I am not willing to wait there until my friend enters the pit stops so I can change the tires. That’s silly.

Games I would Like to play.

Hey you all game addicts out there, if you have 60 seconds for waste just place a comment with games you would like to be out right now so you could play them. There are no rules to this questionnaire, you just ramble which games you would like to see even if they don’t exist.

I for example, I would like to play first GUN 2 from Neversoft, Diablo 3, and Dead Rising 2. The bad part is that on GUN 2 there are no news, there is only one poster with “GUN 2″ in another game from Neversoft. A quick search “on the defacto search engine” gives a few speculative results but nothing concrete. Maybe all the Gun2 fans should come together and post a website only for GUN 2. Perhaps this would be the only feedback that will determine the producers to take action.

Everyone who has played Diablo knows that Diablo3 is still in developing and finishing stages. There are plenty of videos online with about the game play.

Dead Rising 2 has its own website developed by fans, I think, therefore if all the fans of GUN should come together and put a site online for GUN 2, maybe we’ll get some results.

Therefore all you maniacs out there that read this, express your wishes. You do know by now that someone is always listening.

KILLZONE 2

After sinking into the game I started feeling like a close encounter with Gears of War. I guess PS3 had to have its own exclusive counter attack to Gears of War. From the moment the game starts you get swept into an intro movie. We are introduced to Rico and Sev (Sev being your character).  The character’s facial expressions, interaction and sounds are well developed and synchronized. If you can’t make the difference or you don’t have a reference video, look at Quake 4 for XBOX 360 cut scenes videos, then you’ll understand the difference in acting and the lack of expression in dialogs. The KILLZONE2 intro movie is EXCELLENT, it transcends the gamer smoothly into the action. All the cut scenes and dialogs are well developed and acted troughout the game. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the writing is either perfect, or lacking, it is a matter of taste and I would’ve preffered more cut scenes.  There is some character development in the game but I feel that Rico changes too much from the intro movie. In the intro movie he seemed like a cool guy, but his tone seems to change.  There were a few jokes that made the game somewhat more relaxed and fun. I can’t stop about the quality of the acting, it is esquisite. In Quake 4 for Xbox you could see the unnatural acting immediately.

THE GAMEPLAY:

On of the most annoying parts of the game was the viewing angle. I am not sure why would they choose a narrow angle but I as if I was wearing blinders. In addition it felt very claustrophobic throughout the game because this viewing narrow angle. It may have been my impression, but it seemed different than most of the 3D shooters I have played. This is strictly on the viewing angle. None of the games experienced before gave that narrow angle feeling. Perhaps the authors wanted to set this claustrophobic mood, but it hindered the game play, at least for me. This is my pure observing view and I did not read any literature on the game engine, therefore take it lightly on the viewing angle.

The fast running did not allow the character to turn and it did not make a lot of sense, especially that most of the time the fights are in close narrow streets and corridors with plenty of obstacles where one would need some maneuverability.

An addition to the uncomfortable features of the game is the click -to-lock aiming where one has to click and unclik to aim and release instead of holding and releasing the button. Also the knife mode was lacking. The knife mode was better in other games where the hero switches automatically between knife and weapon on the press of a button. The good part of the knife attack is that the player can use it continuously with repetitive blows, with no dead time in between hits. In addition the character’s height was not all there. It seemed that he was shorter than everyone else, if one pays attention will notice that the hero’s line of sight is to all the surrounding people’s chest. It is really bad, it felt like a midget. That was also bad when trying to shoot from high points, because the ledge would be too high and one could not see past it. This game was anticipated to be very real and well thought out, especially after they postponed the release date. But there are a lot of things that really become hindrances. The running and the shaking of the camera is not really cool. I guess they picked the wrong battles to fight when it comes to reality.  Also there was a technological gap. The helgan colonel had that invisibility ability that no one else has, therefore it doesn’t make a lot of sense. When at war for survival, one would use anything to win, Is not like those pretext wars just to make more money, it seems that the Helgans really needed to win, and more soldiers should have been equipped with that invisibility ability. Moreover the Helgans still had firearms at the same time they had a lightning bolt weapons and invisibility? That seems a bit farfetched. Therefore for the technology portrayed in both camps, the weapons should have been at least like the ones in the movie Alien2. Even today we have those prototype weapons that have no recoil (look up metalstorm). For that technological era the guns were a bit disappointing. And by the way the game was extremely short.

And now the good part:

I guess for a short game like that it means the effort went into details. One of such details are excellent graphics. From the details of the graphics POV, lots kudos to the team, the ending movie, BADASS. Music was also good throughout the game, although I did not pay attention to all of it, but whenever I would surface my attention from the struggles of war I noticed some good tunes. Story line was ok for a short game. I was close to the end in seven hours on moderate level, which is not too long of a game, Uncharted was longer than that.

From the technical point of view I can say about the weapon melee attack that is better than most of the games because it is repetitive, one can just continue hitting the enemy if the first blow fails or misses. In addition the way that they made use of the SIXAXIS was pretty nifty. When one uses a sniper rifle he should not move the controller, because it messes up the aiming (like moving your body or breathing). Moreover when placing charges for demolition one needs to use the SIXAXIS to activate them. Another good feature was the lack of weird monsters and other failed genetic experiments or farfetched and unrealistic plots. They kept it simple. The Helgan infantry weaponry was pretty nice. It had all kinds of firearms, and the nicest one was the lightning gun.

As for the online mode I cannot tell too much since I only played it for 10 minutes and I switched back to the single player missions.

Overall was an ok game, the graphics were excellent but then again this is 2009 and the PS3 has an amazing chip inside, moreover PC games now have physics, where to my understanding anything is destroyable. Perhaps the next generation consoles could be equipped with these chips. If it wasn’t for all the above mentioned shortcoming then I would’ve felt differently about it. Or maybe I am just too focused on the shortcoming than the achievements. But I have played games where I really liked the entire game from A to Z. One such game was GUN from Neversoft. Therefore I am not impossible to please.

Lego Star Wars PSP

Being a big fan of Star Wars this was a cant miss for me.  However, in my opinion anyone who plays this will love it.  You ARE the star wars cast… But, you are in lego form.  Your mission is to learn the force and defeat the empire.  You will use any means necessary, this means constructing objects out of legos to get to the proper locations.  The game is outrageous fun, you will be laughing at the responses from your lego characters as you move forward throughout the star wars movie.  The plot of the game coincides with Movies 4, 5, and 6 so If you’ve seen the movies, it would help you along the way.  The best part about it as you progress you obtain new characters, and these new characters can unlock secret parts of the previously played boards.  So, even after you have completed the game you can go back and discover new items on each and every board.
